Puna Man Arrested for Murder Following Shooting in Mountain View

Hawai’i Island police have initiated a murder investigation following a shooting in Mountain View which left a 52-year-old Hilo man dead.
On Tuesday afternoon, November 25, 2025, shortly after 1:30 p.m., Puna patrol officers responded to a report of a man being shot multiple times in the parking lot of the Mountain View Mini Mart. Callers also reported that the suspect was still at the scene and in possession of the firearm.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers immediately arrested the suspect for second-degree murder. He has been identified as 40-year-old Joseph Davis, of Volcano. He was transported to the East Hawai’i Detection Facility in Hilo. Upon arrest, Davis was found in possession of a small zippered bag which witnesses observed him placing a firearm into following the shooting. Police recovered the bag pending execution of a search warrant.
Responding officers and Hawai’i Fire Department personnel located the victim on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. They attempted life-saving measures; however, were unsuccessful.
Area I Criminal Investigation Division personnel responded to the scene to continue this investigation.
The victim was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center and officially pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed Friday morning (November 28) to determine the exact cause of death.
The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.
