Police Thank Participants of HI-PAL Blue Light Fishing Tournament
The Hawai‘i Police Department extend its heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s Hawai‘i Island Police Activities League (HI-PAL) Blue Light Fishing Tournament, held Monday, July 14, 2025, at Four Miles Beach in Hilo.
More than a dozen keiki participated in the tournament, which served as the final event for HI-PAL’s summer fishing programs at Kaumana Elementary School, Chiefess Kapi‘olani Elementary School, and Hilo Intermediate School. Throughout the summer, students learned fishing skills such as tying knots and casting lures. Upon completing the classes, they were invited to put their new skills to the test at the tournament.
During the event, keiki spent quality time with police officers, their families, and siblings, helping to build positive relationships between youth and law enforcement. Officers from the Department of Land and Natural Resources also joined in to support the activities.
Participants received prizes including fishing poles, water containers, and T-shirts. The biggest catch of the day weighed in at nearly one pound. Keiki also cooled off with shave ice and enjoyed laughs and smiles throughout the afternoon.
One grandparent shared their appreciation, saying, “This is a wonderful way to spend a summer afternoon and relax with the keiki.”
The Hawai‘i Police Department looks forward to hosting more events like this in the future and extends its thanks to the participating schools and community partners who helped make the tournament possible.
