Police Investigating Human Remains Located in Downed Banyan Tree in Hilo

Hawai‘i Island police are investigating after human remains were discovered within the debris of a downed banyan tree on Kīlauea Avenue in Hilo on Sunday morning, July 20, 2025.

At approximately 9:41 a.m., police responded to the area following reports of possible human remains located deep within the fallen tree. Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel confirmed the presence of human remains but were unable to extricate them due to safety concerns.

Road crews are responding to the area to assist in clearing the debris so detectives with the Area I Criminal Investigation Section can continue their investigation. Kīlauea Avenue, between Mohouli Street and Pauahi Street, will be closed while crews clear the area and police continue search and recovery efforts.
