The Hawaiʻi Police Department and Hawaiʻi Police Activities League (HI-PAL)  proudly congratulate all the teams, athletes, coaches, and supporters who participated in the Kohala HI-PAL 3-on-3 Invitational Basketball Tournament held on March 28, 2026, at Ikuo Hisaoka Gym in Kapaʻau.

Despite cold and rainy conditions, 117 players across 27 teams competed in five different age brackets. All teams demonstrated determination, teamwork, and outstanding sportsmanship throughout the day. Teams traveled from across Hawaiʻi Island, including Kona, Paʻauilo, Honokaʻa, Waimea, Waikoloa, and Kohala, to take part in this exciting inaugural event.

The tournament began promptly at 8:30 a.m., with games running continuously until 3:30 p.m. The energy remained high all day, with strong community support filling the gym to standing-room-only capacity at times.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department extends a heartfelt mahalo to all coaches who not only guided their teams but also generously volunteered their time to serve as referees throughout the long day. Their commitment ensured the tournament ran smoothly and upheld the spirit of fair play.

We also thank the many fans, families, and supporters who came out to cheer on the athletes. Special appreciation goes to the Kupale Flag Football team for providing delicious concession foods, and to Paliki for offering refreshing açaí bowls, smoothies, desserts, and drinks that kept participants and spectators energized. Lastly, a big mahalo to Mayor Kimo Alameda and his staff, as well as to Department of Parks and Recreation Director Clayton Honma and Deputy Director Melissa Samura for their support.

“We look forward to hosting more HIPAL activities and appreciate the support of the community,” said South Kohala Community Officer Justin Cabanting.

The Hawaiʻi Isle Police Activities League (HI-PAL), established in 1980, continues to play a vital role in our community by providing social and athletic activities for Hawaiʻi Island youth ages 5 to 17. Programs range from boxing, basketball, and fishing tournaments to canoe regattas, BMX bike rallies, skateboarding, school dances, movie nights, musical showcases, rodeo events, and more.

HI-PAL’s mission is to provide varied opportunities for youth who may not otherwise have access to other programs, to foster positive relationships between youth and police officers, and cultivate strong moral and civic values. Through its programs, HI-PAL promotes sportsmanship, friendship, goodwill, and respect, while offering a safe and supportive environment for youth to grow and thrive.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department remains committed to supporting initiatives like HI-PAL that strengthen our community and invest in the future of our keiki.
