Police Charge Two in Connection with String of Car Break-ins in Kona

Hawai‘i Island police have arrested and charged two individuals in connection with a series of vehicle break-ins in the Kona area during August.

Reid Pangelinan of Waimea and Jacqueline Barnes-Carrick of Kailua-Kona, both 35, were arrested and subsequently charged with multiple offenses following an investigation into five vehicle break-ins reported in the Kona area.

On Monday, August 31, 2026, at 2:10 a.m., Kona patrol officers responded to the 78-100 block of Ehukai Street for a report of a vehicle possibly involved in an earlier vehicle break-in. Upon arrival, officers located numerous items believed to have been recently stolen inside the vehicle. Pangelinan and Barnes-Carrick were subsequently placed under arrest, and the vehicle was recovered as evidence.

Personnel from the Hawai‘i Police Department’s Area II Criminal Investigation Section assumed responsibility for the investigation. Through follow-up investigation, contact with multiple victims, and the execution of a search warrant, detectives recovered numerous stolen items determined to be connected to five separate vehicle break-ins.

During the execution of the search warrant, detectives also recovered suspected narcotics, including approximately 31.2 grams of marijuana and 0.5 grams of methamphetamine.

After conferring with the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney on Tuesday, Sept. 1, Pangelinan was charged with the following offenses:

• (5 counts) first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle
• (2 counts) second-degree theft
• (4 counts) third-degree criminal property damage
• Habitual property crime
• Third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug – methamphetamine
• Second-degree promotion of a detrimental drug – marijuana

Pangelinan’s total bail was set at $100,000.

Barnes-Carrick was charged as an accomplice to the following offenses:

• (5 counts) first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle
• (2 counts) second-degree theft
• (4 counts) third-degree criminal property damage

Barnes-Carrick’s total bail was set at $39,000.

The Hawai‘i Police Department reminds the public to remove valuables from unattended vehicles and to secure their vehicles when left unattended.
