South Kohala patrol officer Travis Wong was named Officer of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2026 by the Hawai‘i Island Safety and Security Professionals Association (HISSPA) during a ceremony held on Friday, August 14, 2026 in South Kohala. An eight-year veteran of the department, Officer Wong was recognized for his professionalism, courage, and dedication to public safety.

In May 2026, South Kohala patrol officers responded to a domestic-type incident. A woman reported that her ex-boyfriend threatened her while brandishing a firearm, and then physically assaulted her. Officer Wong, along with his partners, encountered the male suspect, who was holding an infant while pleading with officers to shoot him. After about 30 minutes of negotiating with the suspect, he released the unharmed infant and surrendered to police without further incident.

“Officer Wong’s exceptional tactical patience and communication skills brought a peaceful resolution to an extremely dangerous situation,” said nominating supervisor, Sergeant Bradden Kimura.

Officer Wong’s investigative efforts led to the recovery of several illegally possessed rifles, a suppressor, a loaded 9mm magazine and additional various ammunition.

The suspect was arrested and charged with criminal contempt of court, four counts of abuse of a family or household member, first-degree terroristic threatening, and five counts of ownership or possession prohibited.

Officer Wong’s composure under pressure, compassion, commitment to de-escalation, investigative expertise, and unwavering dedication to protecting the community exemplify the highest standards of the Hawai‘i Police Department. His actions resulted in the safe release of the infant, protected the victim from further harm, and removed multiple dangerous weapons from the community.

This is Officer Wong’s second Officer of the Quarter award from HISSPA.  He was previously recognized as the HISSPA Officer of the Fourth Quarter 2025 earlier this year.
