For his professionalism, sound judgment, and dedication to public safety, Officer Wilson Gani was recognized as the Kaʻū District Officer of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of 2025 during a ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026.

Since being assigned to the Kaʻū District in Aug. 2021, Officer Gani has consistently demonstrated reliability and a strong commitment to the community he serves.

One incident contributing to this recognition occurred on Nov. 6, 2025, at 8:28 a.m., when Officer Gani responded to the area of Marlin Boulevard and Kailua Boulevard in Ocean View following a report of a white Toyota pickup truck with an attached trailer parked partially on the roadway. The male driver was reportedly asleep behind the wheel.

Upon arrival, Officer Gani observed the vehicle obstructing traffic near a residential driveway.

During his investigation, he found the driver reclined and asleep in the driver’s seat with the engine running. Officer Gani also observed a brown dog inside the vehicle and an AR-type rifle near the front passenger seat, partially covered with a towel and containing a loaded magazine.

Officer Gani attempted to secure the firearm through a partially open passenger-side window but was unable to safely reach it. While alone at the scene, he repositioned to a location of cover, maintained visual observation of the driver, and requested backup.

While awaiting additional officers, the driver awoke. Officer Gani issued verbal commands, directing the driver to raise his hands and place them against the driver-side window. The driver complied and was safely taken into custody without incident. He was later charged with multiple firearm- and drug-related offenses.

“Officer Gani is a well-rounded officer who remains steadfast and consistent in his efforts to serve the Ka`u community,” said Kaʻū District Commander Pernell Hanoa. His actions and decision-making helped safely resolve a potentially dangerous situation without injury to the public, officers, or the suspect.
