Hilo HI-PAL to Host Second Annual Kawamoto Classic Swimming Event

Hawai‘i Island police invite youth ages 8 to 17 to take part in the second annual Kawamoto Classic Swimming Event, hosted by Hawai‘i Police Department and the Hawai‘i Island Police Activities League (HI-PAL) in partnership with the County of Hawai‘i Parks and Recreation Aquatics Division and USA Swimming.

The free event will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium, 260 Kalanikoa St. in Hilo.

The Kawamoto Classic is designed to introduce keiki to aquatic sports and promote water safety. Activities will include water polo demonstrations, diving instruction, and swimming techniques led by County of Hawai‘i Aquatics Lifeguards and community volunteers.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. on the day of the event. Walk-in participants are welcome, and forms will be available on site. A signed parent or guardian permission slip is required, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. A short swimming test will be administered to determine each participant’s skill level.

All participants should wear appropriate swimming attire and are encouraged to bring a light lunch or snack. Both beginners and non-swimmers are welcome.
