During the week of Jan. 1, through Jan. 4, 2026, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 13 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 13 DUI arrests compared with 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 18.18 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 10 major crashes so far this year, compared with 11 major collisions during the same time last year, a decrease of 9.09 percent.

As of Jan. 4, there have been 0 fatal crashes, resulting in 0 fatalities compared with one fatal crash, resulting in one fatality for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 100 percent for fatal crashes and 100 percent for fatalities.

In 2026, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) was zero, compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year. 

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
