The Hawaiʻi Police Department’s Special Response Team (SRT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), in collaboration with the Hawaiʻi Fire Department and Hilo Benioff Medical Center personnel, will conduct a joint training exercise on Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Hilo Benioff Medical Center.

During the exercise, members of the public may observe an increased presence of police and fire personnel, along with specialized emergency response vehicles and equipment.

HPD personnel will use the SRT BearCat armored vehicle, CNT response vehicle, and marked blue-and-white police vehicles. HFD personnel will also participate with marked emergency response SUVs and an ambulance.

The training exercise will take place within designated areas extending from Rainbow Falls to Hilo Benioff Medical Center and will not interfere with normal hospital operations or patient services.

The public is advised that this is a planned training exercise and there is no cause for alarm. These exercises provide valuable opportunities for emergency responders to strengthen interagency coordination, communication, and readiness for critical incidents.

HPD appreciates the community’s understanding and cooperation as personnel conduct this important training.

For inquiries regarding the training exercise, please contact Lieutenant Kevin Brodie, Special Response Team Commander, at Kevin.Brodie@hawaiipolice.gov.
