(Update) Police Identify Suspect Killed in Ocean View Officer Involved Shooting

Hawai‘i Island police have identified the man killed in yesterday’s officer involved shooting in Ocean View as 31-year-old Nafetelai Teisina of Ocean View. The investigation into this incident remains active and ongoing. The Hawai‘i Police Department Office of Professional Standards has initiated a critical incident review as is standard practice in officer-involved shootings. The officer who fired his firearm has been with the department for less than a year and is assigned to the Ka‘ū patrol division. He has been placed on administrative leave to ensure he is mentally, emotionally, and physically able to return to work.
Chief Mahuna will hold a press conference this afternoon at 1 p.m. to discuss details regarding the shooting. Body worn camera footage of the incident will be released to the media within the next 24 hours.
