The Hawaiʻi Police Department is partnering with Hope Services Hawai‘i to host an islandwide backpack drive to ensure children at risk of homelessness have the supplies they need for the upcoming school year.

Community members are invited to drop off new and unfilled backpacks at any Hawai‘i Island police station now through Thursday, July 23, 2026.  Backpacks are among the most requested item by families with children.

“Having a new backpack and school supplies can help keiki feel confident and excited about the school year,” said Kehau Fontes, development coordinator for Hope Services Hawaiʻi.

Since 2008, the Hawaiʻi Police Department has collected thousands of backpacks for Hawaiʻi Island keiki in emergency shelters or who are currently experiencing, at-risk of experiencing, or overcoming homelessness.

Your contribution to help a child in need is greatly appreciated.
