Several sections of the Hawai‘i Police Department, including its School Resource Officers, proudly congratulated the 2026 graduates of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program during the department’s annual DARE Day celebration held Friday, May 8, 2026, at Kawamoto Swim Stadium in Hilo.

More than 800 students from schools across East Hawaii attended the event, including Hilo Intermediate, Waiakea Intermediate, Pāhoa Intermediate, Honoka‘a Intermediate, Kea‘au Middle School, Keonepoko Elementary, Kalaniana‘ole Elementary, and Pa‘auilo Elementary School.

DARE is a nationally recognized program designed to equip students with the skills needed to make responsible decisions, resist peer pressure, avoid substance abuse, and effectively handle bullying and other life challenges. The “Keepin’ it REAL” curriculum emphasizes safe, healthy, and responsible choices through evidence-based lessons taught by certified DARE officers.

The ceremony began with opening remarks from Police Chief Reed Mahuna, who congratulated students on their accomplishments and encouraged them to continue making positive choices. Police Chaplain Jeremy Barrientos delivered the benediction, followed by a presentation of colors by the Hilo High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. Ms. Lyles Yokoyama performed the national anthem.

One of the day’s highlights included a joint emergency response demonstration by the Hawai‘i Police Department and Hawai‘i Fire Department. Students observed a simulated traffic collision scenario featuring emergency medical response efforts and a helicopter airlift. The department’s Special Response Team also conducted a bomb threat response demonstration using a robotic device, giving students an up-close look at specialized public safety operations.

Following the demonstrations, students enjoyed a day of celebratory activities, featuring waterslides, swimming, carnival-style games, and friendly competitions. Keonepoko Elementary School earned top honors in the tug-of-war championship and was awarded the perpetual trophy to display at their school.

The Hawai‘i Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to the volunteers, county agencies, community partners, and supporting organizations whose contributions helped make the event possible.

Programs such as DARE continue to play an important role in helping students develop confidence, communication skills, and positive decision-making abilities that will guide them well beyond the classroom.
