Police Investigating Pedestrian Crash in Captain Cook

Hawai‘i Island police are investigating a pedestrian crash that occurred in Captain Cook Sunday morning, March 22, 2026.

At 8:38 a.m., police responded to the reported crash in the area of the 109 mile-marker on Mamalahoa Highway near the intersection of Koa Road. Investigators determined that a 19-year-old Captain Cook man was crouching on the mauka shoulder of the road when he jumped into the path of an oncoming 2020 Toyota Tundra pickup truck traveling northbound and operated by a 64-year-old Captain Cook man.

The pedestrian was taken to Kona Community Hospital and subsequently transported to Queens Medical Center on Oahu where he remains in critical condition. The operator of the Toyota pickup truck was not injured in the collision.

The department’s Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) responded to the scene of the crash and Mamalahoa Highway was closed for nearly three hours as part of their investigation. At this time, police do not believe speed, alcohol, and/or drugs were factors in this collision.
