Officer Sluss Honored with Hāweo Award for Dedication to Community Engagement
For his outstanding commitment to community policing and the meaningful partnerships he has fostered in West Hawai‘i, Kona Community Policing Officer Dwayne Sluss received the Hāweo Award during a ceremony held at the Hawai‘i County Council Chambers in Kona on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
A 14-year veteran of the department, Officer Sluss has served in the Kona Community Policing Section since 2020. During that time, he has distinguished himself through proactive outreach efforts and innovative problem-solving strategies aimed at improving the well-being of the communities he serves.
His approach to community policing is grounded in proactive engagement, and he has gone above and beyond the call of duty to organize and sustain numerous successful outreach programs.
One of Officer Sluss’ most notable accomplishments has been the creation, planning, and coordination of events such as the annual Fill-a-Cruiser food drive and Cocoa with a Cop. Since its inception in 2021, Fill-a-Cruiser has successfully collected over 11,301 pounds of food and $18,958 in monetary donations for The Food Basket, Hawai‘i Island’s food bank.
These events not only bring community members together, but also foster positive relationships between the public and law enforcement. Beyond launching new initiatives, Officer Sluss has also played a key role in the continued success of flagship programs such as Coffee with a Cop and Shop with a Cop, ensuring they maintain their strong community impact year after year.
A natural “people person,” Officer Sluss thrives on forming and strengthening relationships. His genuine ability to connect with others makes him a valued resource within the Kona Community Policing Section, particularly when coordinating with external agencies and community partners. His willingness to take the lead in collaborative efforts exemplifies the essence of community policing — fostering trust, communication, and cooperation between law enforcement and the public.
Hāweo, which means “to glow” or “to be radiant,” is presented monthly to recognize police and fire department personnel who go above and beyond in their service to the public.
The Hawai‘i Police Department congratulates Officer Sluss for his tireless dedication and unwavering commitment to community engagement.
