(Update) Pedestrian Struck in Hilo Collision Succumbs to Injuries

Hawai‘i Island police report that the 60-year-old Ocean View man who was struck near the intersection of Kino‘ole Street and Ponahawai Street in Hilo on Wednesday morning, June 18, 2025, has died. The man has been identified as Terry Lytle.

Responding to a 10:10 a.m. call, Hilo patrol officers determined that a 2001 Ford E250 van, operated by a 39-year-old Hilo man, was traveling southbound on Kino‘ole Street when Lytle walked into traffic eastbound, outside of a marked crosswalk. The van struck Lytle, causing him to sustain life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. Lytle succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 8:05 a.m. on June 25, 2025.

The operator of the van was not injured and was not arrested as a result of the collision.

The East Hawai‘i Traffic Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and is continuing the investigation. At this time, police do not believe that speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the crash.

Police have reclassified the investigation from a negligent injury to a negligent homicide. This is the 14th traffic fatality of 2025, compared to 18 traffic fatalities at the same time last year.
