Hawai‘i Island police have charged 22-year-old Alaina Kainoa-Aukai of Ocean View for multiple offenses, including attempted murder, relating to a traffic collision that substantially injured a 24-year-old Ocean View man in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision on Tuesday evening, June 17, 2025.

At 9:10 p.m. on Tuesday, Ka‘ū patrol officers responded to a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision near the area of Princess Kaiulani Boulevard and Lotus Blossom Lane. Upon arrival, officers contacted Kainoa-Aukai who identified herself as the operator of the vehicle and displayed signs of impairment.

The pedestrian, who was determined by police to be Kainoa-Aukai’s 24-year-old boyfriend, sustained substantial bodily injury as a result of the collision and was transported by medical personnel to Kona Community Hospital for treatment.

Further investigation indicated that Kainoa-Aukai had allegedly been involved in a domestic dispute with the 24-year-old man prior to the collision.

Upon arrest, Kainoa-Aukai became combative and kicked an officer multiple times in the leg prior to being placed into a police transport vehicle.

Kainoa-Aukai was transported to the Kona Police Station where she was held as police detectives continued their investigation. On Thursday, June 19, after conferring with the Hawai‘i County Prosecutor’s Office, Kainoa-Aukai was charged for the following offenses:

  • Second-degree attempted murder
  • Second-degree assault
  • First-degree negligent injury
  • Operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant
  • First-degree assault against a law enforcement officer

Her total bail was set at $1,020,000. Kainoa-Aukai is slated for her initial court appearance on Friday, June 20, in Kona District Court.
