This Memorial Day weekend, as we honor our fallen heroes, let’s also protect our community by making responsible choices on the road.

In 2024, Hawai‘i County experienced a tragic surge in traffic fatalities, with 29 lives lost—nearly double the 15 fatalities in 2023. Impaired driving was a significant factor, contributing to many of these deaths.

The Hawai‘i Police Department arrested 964 individuals for driving under the influence in 2024, a slight increase from the previous year. Additionally, 277 impaired drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and 71 were under the age of 21 .  This Memorial Day, commit to driving sober. If you’re impaired, don’t drive. Designate a sober driver, use a ride-sharing service, or stay where you are.

The Hawai‘i Police Department will be conducting DUI checkpoints and patrols island-wide to ensure everyone’s safety.

Let’s honor our heroes by keeping our roads safe. Drive sober. Drive with aloha.
