SUMMARY:HI-PAL Keiki Poke Contest in Kona
DESCRIPTION:On June 20\, 2026 from 11 am-2 pm\, the Kona Community Policing\, in collaboration with the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel and Bryan Fujikawa\, Executive Chef and owner of KGH Catering\, will present the first HI-PAL Keiki Poke Contest. \nThis exciting event is designed to inspire and support the next generation of young cooks by introducing them to the culinary arts in a fun\, meaningful\, and accessible way. Through hands-on experience\, participants will have the opportunity to explore their creativity\, build confidence in the kitchen\, and gain a deeper appreciation for the cultural traditions and heritage of poke. \nThe contest is limited to 15 contestants and will be divided into three age groups: 5–8\, 9–12\, and 13–17 years old. For safety and support\, each participant may be accompanied by an adult throughout the competition. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all\, all fish will be pre-cut in advance\, allowing contestants to focus on seasoning\, creativity\, and presentation rather than knife skills. \nMore than just a competition\, the HI-PAL Keiki Poke Contest aims to create a positive and encouraging environment where keiki can learn\, have fun\, and showcase their talents while developing valuable culinary skills and a greater appreciation for Hawaiʻi’s rich food traditions. \nRegistration Information \nA completed waiver form is required for each participant. DESCRIPTION:The Hawai‘i Police Department invites the public to attend a “Heal Our Highways” community awareness event on Saturday\, May 23\, 2026\, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Church Row in Waimea. \nLaunched in October 2025 by the department’s Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit\, the Heal Our Highways campaign was designed to increase awareness about the impact of traffic fatalities on the loved ones and friends of those killed. Organizers hope to bring together community members\, public safety agencies\, healthcare professionals\, faith-based organizations\, and local leaders in support of safer highways throughout Hawai‘i Island. \n“The impact that traffic fatalities have on those left behind is life altering\,” said Area II Traffic Enforcement Officer Adam Roberg\, who developed the campaign. \nThe gathering will also honor the life of Pastor Sione Tilini\, a beloved Waimea resident and pastor whose recent passing in a traffic collision deeply impacted the community. \nRepresentatives from several agencies and organizations are expected to participate\, including the County of Hawai‘i Mayor’s Office\, Hawai‘i Police Department\, Hawai‘i Fire Department\, North Hawai‘i Community Hospital\, Hawai‘i Department of Law Enforcement Sheriffs\, Department of Land and Natural Resources\, local tow companies\, churches\, and other community groups. \nOrganizers encourage the public to attend and stand united in remembrance\, healing\, and action to help prevent future tragedies on Hawai‘i Island roadways.

SUMMARY:Talk Story with the Chief
DESCRIPTION:The Hawaiʻi Police Department invites the public to attend Police Chief Reed Mahuna’s next informal “Talk Story with the Chief” session on Tuesday\, March 17\, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kō Education Center\, 45-539 Plumeria St.\, Honoka‘a. \nReflecting the Chief’s commitment to community engagement\, the free talk story sessions are aimed at strengthening communication and connection between police leadership and the community. \nThe meetings rotate throughout Hawaiʻi Island and provide residents an opportunity to meet directly with Chief Reed Mahuna and district commanders to share concerns\, ask questions\, and discuss public safety issues in an open\, conversational setting. The informal format is intentional and reflects the department’s goal of being accessible and responsive to the community. \n“We want to meet people where they are\, in their own communities\, and create space for genuine conversation\,” said Mahuna. “By hearing directly from our residents\, we can better understand their priorities and work together to address the issues that matter most.” \nMembers of the public are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion. \nThe April meeting will be held on April 21 in North Kohala at a location to be announced.
